Natural Home Remedies and Diet to cure Kidney Stones

Recently one of my friends was diagnosed with Kidney stones. He had severe pain in his lower abdomen. He had to be admitted to hospital and the Kidney stone was found out to be approximately 10 millimeters long. It was then; I decided to explore some home remedies to cure Kidney stones naturally.

What exactly is Kidney Stone?

The buildup of dissolved minerals on the inner lining of the Kidney results in the formation of Kidney stones. The formation usually consists of calcium oxalate but may be composed of several other compounds.

The size of the stones may be so small that it may easily pass through your urinary tract without even you noticing it. On the other hand Kidney stones can become as big as golf ball.

The problem starts when the Kidney stone becomes more than 5 millimeter. It is then when it gets blocked in the ureter and you start feeling the pain in the areas near your urinary track. You start getting symptoms such as blood in urine, vomiting, nausea, burning sensation in the urine and so on.

What causes Kidney Stone?

The primary cause of Kidney stone is lack of water in the body. People who drink less than eight to ten glasses are more likely to develop Kidney stones.

When there is not enough water in the body to dilute the uric acid, a compound of urine, the urine becomes more acidic. The increase in the acidic environment in the urine leads to the formation of Kidney stones.

Other causes can be the medicines we eat. For instance the long term consumption of vitamin D and calcium supplements cause high level of calcium, which can result in the formation of Kidney stones.
Home Remedies and Food to eat to pass out the Kidney Stones

1. Water
The first and the most important thing is to drink plenty of water. If the Kidney stones are small then there is a possibility that they will dissolve in the urine and will be flushed out of the body naturally. The water should be pure and should have no impurities in it.

2. Herbs
An herbs such as fresh basil leaves strengthen your Kidneys. It acts as a detoxifier, cleans your kidney and breaks down the Kidney stones to help them pass out through urine. Basil leaves when combined with purified water and a small amount of honey will give your taste buds a real treat. Other herbs such as nettle, cleavers, corn silk, crampbark, gravel root, hydrangia and kava kava too will provide you with good results.

3. Fresh Vegetables
Fresh vegetables have high fiber content. High fiber content helps to push out the kidney stones. Include fresh vegetables such as pumpkin, green peas, cauliflower, cabbage and tomatoes in your regular diet as salads. It's quite helpful.

4. Fresh Fruits
We all at some point of our life, on our own or on the advice of our elders might have prepared and drank freshly squeezed lemon juice with water before meal. It's quite effective. It detoxifies your system making it more alkaline and thus making it easier for acidic stones to dissolve. Who thought it could be so fruitful. It gives us the moral that the advices from our elders should not be ignored.

Watermelon is one of the best fruit for Kidney stone cure. This is due to the fact it consists of high amount of potassium salts that helps to regulate acidic levels in urine. Other fresh fruits are peaches, pineapples, papaya, pears, grapes and cranberries. They help to break down the acids which help in the Kidney stone formation.

5. Don't eat food with high-oxalate content
Food such as spinach, almonds, peanuts, sesame seeds, sweet potato and beets should be skipped as they tend to increase the oxalate level in the body.

6. Limit the food rich in sodium
If you eat more food which is rich in sodium it will further not help your cause. Sodium increases the calcium level in the urine which triggers the formation of Kidney stones.

7. Kidney Beans
I don't know whether this is just a co-incidence or by chance that Kidney beans are good for Kidneys. Kidney beans almost look like the shape of our Kidneys. Kidney beans being rich in fiber help in the cleaning and proper functioning of the kidneys.

8. Pomegranate Juice
As we all know pomegranates are rich in potassium. Potassium prevents the formation of minerals crystals which can further develop into Kidney stones. Due to its astringent properties it flushes out the toxins out of the kidney and reduces the acidity level of the urine.

9. Lemon Juice and Olive Oil
Take four tablespoons of lemon juice and equal amount of olive oil and mix them together. Drink it first thing in the morning; follow it by drinking plenty of water. Repeat the same procedure in the late afternoon. It is of the view that lemon juice breaks down the Kidney stone while olive oil acts as a lubricant to pass out the kidney stones from the urinary track.

Continue this treatment for several days until the kidney stones are removed. This treatment might work out for some people while it may not work out for others.

10. Limit animal protein intake
There are many sources of animal proteins such as red meat, fish, chickens, poultry and pork. When you eat them it increases the production of uric acid and at the same time decreases a chemical in the urine known as citrate. The main function of citrate is to prevent the formation of kidney stones.

So it is better to avoid animal protein and try alternatives such as Greek yogurt, chia seeds and quinoa for the protein requirement of our body.

11. Celery
Celery is very useful in the prevention and as well as in the cure of Kidney Stones. Drinking a glass of raw celery juice will give you relief from Kidney stone pain due to its anti-spasmodic properties. Celery juice helps to remove the toxins that are responsible for the formation of Kidney stone.

Avoid colas, energy drinks, alcohol and beverages if you have Kidney stones as it can further aggravate your condition.
